Christine,

They may have been "the real thing" but you have no way of knowing how they were processed, or if some chemicals were used during the growing process. Unless you know the grower, you really don't know.

California has some state laws against psilocybine mushrooms that the other states do not have. I know for a fact that the sale of psilocybine mushroom spore prints is not controlled by Federal law, or most all of the states. But CA stands alone in that it does have a law that prohibits CA residents from purchasing these by mail order.

In any case, once some of the popular species are seen growing in the wild, they are quite easy to reliably identify. But it's always a good idea to be aided by a mushroom hunter instead of relying on books alone.

Every August in Telluride, CO there is a conference named Fungophile. I believe they have a web site this year. The purpose of the conference is to exchange information on the harvesting and cultivation of medicinal and culinary mushrooms. Many of the attendees are interested primarily in psilocybine mushrooms.

They have one or two forays in the hills and pastures, but I've heard that in recent years they have found very few psilocybine.

Karry Mullis (sp?) received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry a few years back. He is a very outspoken proponent of the use of psychedelic drugs, and will be the Keynote Speaker at Fungophile. They also have a Mushroom Parade through the streets of Telluride.

Just to be on the safe side. If walking home with a bag of suspicious mushrooms and confronted with the question "what are they?", the correct answer is "I don't know, do you?" Saying you're going to cook them up could well be construed as evidence of your knowledge of what they are, as well as your intent to ingest them.
