The first thing that has to happen, is your ISP has to upgrade
to v.90.

Next, you can upgrade to 56k v.90 by downloading
software or firmware from 3Com. I'm not sure of the exact
mechanics, just go to the 3Com web site - they'll lead you
through it.

I don't use a modem connection myself (I use the ol'
T1 line from work - home modem's are too painful for me)

A lot of the previous posts refer to technical details of
x2 modems. Look for the
ones by Dick Smith in this thread and the 'ghost' thread.
I think he's the leading hardware guru for this stuff :>
