To Larry and Kent,
I'm definitely not an expert in this area. But I try to follow the technical issues here. Cable is (currently) one way because of the inherent nature in the way the video signal is distributed to customers.--one signal going to all customers at once. I as a single customer I cannot transmit a signal back to the cable company. Two way communication (read internet) is not possible.
One method cable companies are considering is re-laying fiber optic "cable" from their source to the box in your yard. Then a converter would connect to your cable to finish the link into your house. Cable can carry a lot of information, especially if compression techniques are utilized. So that portion of the expense need not necessarily be reaccomplished.
By laying the fiber cable companies can transform their one way broadcast system into an interactive system allowing internet and television signals...Laying fiber, cable or whatever is, however, the most expensive part of providing the service. That is where wireless (or satellite) technologies win out.
From my reading on the subject, the successful companies are going to be the ones that merge together to provide the services they are best at and together combining technologies, they beat the market with the best value.
