NEC to Cease Domestic Production of 16 Megabit DRAM

NEC <TOKYO:6701> says it is joining the ranks of memory
manufacturers reducing output of 16-megabit DRAM. Reflecting
the industry shift to 64 megabits, the company is cutting off
production of the older standard from domestic plants. Only
California-based NEC Electronics will continue to make 16-
megabit DRAM. Subsidiaries NEC Hiroshima and NEC Kyushu will
cease shipments when manufacturing supplies are used up around
the summer season. Falling prices have accelerated the move
away from the 16-megabit format. Toshiba <TOKYO:6502> plans to quit
production later this year, and others are reducing output.
After consolidating its own output in the US, NEC will continue
to lower output during the year.
