There was a big video and audio show in Taipei. Of course, the Japanese and Taiwanese companies must be present. Those big names have some DVD shown in the trade show. I talked to the Japanese about c-cube's chip. I was shocked by their reply. They told me that the Mpeg2 chip was fabricated in Japan, NOT America. Then I talked to the Taiwanese. They told me that Taiwan already can fabricate the Mpeg2 chip lone time ago. They new DVD is designed aroung the Mpeg2 chip. Think about this. If the Taiwanese can fabricate their own chip, it is a piece of cake for the Japanese.
I agree that Cube may have better technology. However, we need to think more deeply. Do you beleive that Japanese will help to close the trade deflicit with USA by choosing C-Cube's chip? Do you like to buy something overseas and NOT working with someone next door? Usually, the guy next door is a better choice. Do you beleive that Japanese will like the most important chip (Mpeg2)of a most important product (DVD) controlled by the American? Think about this. According to my own understanding of the Japanese while I worked in Japan, Japanese will NOT allow something happen like this. If it is a chip like INtel's microprocessor, they have no choice. Usually, what is quite will win. We do NOT know which Japanese company fabricates the chip yet.
I also talked to an American company, RCA. They told me that they fabricated their own chip.
As long as the DVD is delayed, other companies have longer time to catch up. Whether to use a cheaper chip or a more costly chip need to include the factors of import duty, shipment and POLItical factors.
It is NOT known whether the 1st shippment of DVD will use C-Cube and then the Asian will change to use their own chip. If it happens like the Meg1, then it is really really bad. However, the later shippment will count much more as the market becomes more mature.
