Windows NT Server deployments in Fortune 1000 firms up 200% in past 12 months, study shows
Multipurpose server operating system of Microsoft BackOffice top choice for future deployments, too
Redmond, WA-At Fortune 1000 firms everywhere, Microsoftr Windows NTr Server is the odds-on favorite, a recent study suggests. Computer Intelligence, a high-tech market research company that tracks server operating system deployments every month, released a report in April that shows 86 percent of all Fortune 1000 firms have already deployed Windows NT Server. This represents a 200 percent increase in Windows NT deployments in the past 12 months alone. Windows NT Server, it seems, has the goods that Fortune 1000 companies demand. "We have a mission-critical environment that demands the highest level of system uptime," said Sushil Vayas, a vice president at First Union Capital Market, a financial services firm. "By migrating our overall network infrastructure to Windows NT Server 4.0, we have a platform that is reliable, secure, scalable and Year 2000 compliant and that will allow us to easily take advantage of the benefits of Windows NT Server 5.0." First Union Capital is in good company. Most Fortune 1000 firms-in such diverse industries as finance, manufacturing, media, retail, technology and transportation-have already deployed Windows NT Server. And the momentum of Windows NT deployments shows no signs of slowing. A Computer Intelligence survey of 5,000 LAN administrators revealed that 70 percent of them also have plans to acquire Windows NT Server 4.0-more than twice the number who are considering a purchase of any other operating system. "These organizations are moving to Windows NT Server to decrease the costs of deploying and managing scalable and reliable enterprise solutions and to take advantage of its integrated Web, application and communication services," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president, personal and business systems group at Microsoft. Microsoft designed Windows NT Server to deliver on all these counts and more. The multipurpose server operating system of the BackOfficer family, Windows NT Server offers a complete, Year 2000-compliant platform for building and hosting Web- and PC-based applications-one whose set-up and management features make it easy to use. The Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack further enhances these capabilities by offering new Web, transaction, scripting, component and message-queuing services as well as Internet Information Server 4.0 (IIS), the latest edition of the integrated Web server for Windows NT Server. The Option Pack comes with Windows NT Server.
Windows NT Server also offers a comprehensive security architecture that safeguards all BackOffice-based applications. Those applications include Microsoft SQL ServerT, a high-performance database application; Microsoft Site Server Commerce Edition for e-commerce; Microsoft Exchange Server, a messaging and collaboration platform; Microsoft SNA Server, a gateway and applications integration solution; Microsoft Proxy Server, a secure gateway to the Internet; and Microsoft Systems Management Server for efficient management of desktop hardware and software. Windows NT Server is also designed to be easy to use and to support the kind of computing environments that enterprises need to stay competitive. "Fortune 1000 companies lead the industry in innovation and continually push technology to its limits," Microsoft's Allchin said of the growing popularity of Windows NT Server. Fortunately, it would seem the innovation they demand is well within their grasp. |
