Switching Platforms

The point is that it has already happened, and the switch has been from Netware to NT at the small server end of the spectrum.

Novell is holding on to its large enterprise business, what I once called the 40% solution, where directories are attractive and stability is valued. WHY DO IT (switch to another platrform) is a good argument here.

Unfortunately either Novell develops new markets for its products --- remember its supposed to become a leader in the Internet market or it downsizes. Its not impossible for Novell to do this but I will be looking very closely at the numbers this Quarter. I'd especially like to see whether they have captured any percentage of the web server NOS market from NT and UNIX based systems.

Although most of the action on Novell is on the Call side, I wouldn't be aggressively arguing that switching away from the Novell platform is stupid when the market is telling you that is exactly what has happened. Frankly this is really a non-issue since the method of presenting this argument is to feature swithc back customers and their reasons, which I believe Novell has done but not aggressively in PR.

Frankly I think Schmidt made a deal with MSFT. He conceded the small server arena in return for limited attacks on Novell's corporate base. Unfortunately for Novell investors that will not cut it in the long run.

By the way your 3.12 customer will probably replace you with the NT guy across the street the minute his system fails and they do another look see. Did you install that year 2000 patch?
