Microsoft will continue to be a force, but Netscape and others have succeeded against Microsoft in this regard: No longer do all roads from consumer to information go through Redmond. Already, the $300 Web TV device has established a beach head. Consumers have a choice and it may be the beginning of an explosion. Whether Windows CE or the NC or Javastation or the fat client running Windows 95/3.1/NT is the superior platform is the subject of long-winded (though entertaining) religious debates.

I'm convinced of this: Access to the web is the single-most compelling reason for the 70-90% percent of the population that doesn't already own a PC to make the investment. And if given a choice between two devices that deliver this access - one that costs $1000 from the likes of Dell and Compaq, and the other a $300 Sony or Magnavox, many will choose the latter.

Netscape is working to make its browser run on platforms from the NC to PDA's to Nintendo-like game consoles. If nothing else, they and solutions like Sony/Magnavox/WebTV have given consumers some simple and inexpensive non-Windows options, and these options are starting to take hold.

If Microsoft was counting on making itself the platform of choice for the huge untapped consumer market, they'll need to get to work. I don't think they'll dominate this the way they've come to dominate the corporate desktop. They don't have the headstart here that they have previously enjoyed, and the competition is strong, diverse, and intent upon preserving a truly open architecture.
