The problem with wartime metaphors is they get abused.

For example, in the case of Microsoft we have Herr, er, I mean Chairman Gates having the gall to claim he's the allies and giving his latest software gizmos pretentious names like "Normandy" and "Tripoli" (what's IE called, "Dunkirk"?).

Although I find the whole World War II analogy rather demeaning to the sacrifices made during the real thing and a potential public relations disaster for whoever uses it (what if "Normandy" gets pushed right off the beaches?), I will say I think that they have it exactly reversed: Netscape, Sun et al. are the allies, working to liberate the software industry from years of Microsoft occupation.
