I think you vastly underrate the important roles which the fortitude of the Russian people, Russian geography, and the industrial strength of the United States played in World War II.

Hitler screwed up by invading Russia, but it was the Russian people, in particular during the Battle of Stalingrad, which turned the tide of the war. They used sheer numbers, geography and climate to turn back a technologically superior enemy.

Meanwhile, the U.S. simply out-produced the German military-industrial machine and overwhelmed the Axis with guns, tanks and planes (kind of like what the North did to the South in the Civil War).

Maybe Microsoft thinks it can use similar tactics to win in the software battles it faces. Or maybe, like Hitler, it will lose. One thing is clear: like Hitler, Microsoft is fighting a multi-front war.
