<If Microsoft was counting on making itself the platform of choice for the huge untapped consumer market, they'll need to get to work. I don't think they'll dominate this the way they've come to dominate the corporate desktop. They don't have the headstart here that they have previously enjoyed, and the competition is strong, diverse, and intent upon preserving a truly open architecture.>

Now this is a statement that makes sense. I don't know if the WebTV has made a beachhead, but it does seem likely. I believe that the price of low end PC's will come down to meet the WebTV and provide competition (through additional functionality at a comparable price) in the very near future. You can get a high end, competantly equipped 486 or a low end Pentium for between $399 and $700 (these prices drop even further everytime INTC cuts chip prices). These machines will enalbe you to do more thatn just surf the web. the present regime will not voluntarily allow the commodity products such as the webtv to encroach upon thier turf.
