Please elaborate on why you think that the cable companies would
need a new wire or cable to your home to provide data services.
I believe that you are incorrect, I thought that the bandwidth of
a coaxial cable exceeded the bandwidth of a twisted pair by 1, if not
2, orders of magnitude. From this standpoint it would seem that the
cable companies are at a distinct advantage, not disadvantage, in the
last link to your house. Who wouldn't mind giving up a few channels
to get these new data services? Perhaps the cable companies real area
of weakness is in the switching infrastructure needed to deliver these
services. What would be required for them there may in fact be quite
expensive. I don't know. I'd be interested in anybody's comments on
what would be required for the cable companies to offer different levels
of data services comparable to current or proposed offerings by the
telcos.
