[AT&T Reaction to USWest/QWEST Agreement]

WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The following may be attributed to Mark Rosenblum, AT&T vice president - law and public policy:

The Bell companies have spent more energy over the past two years looking for ways to get around the Telecom Act than they've spent to comply and open their markets to competition. Today's announcement is just the latest example of that unfortunate crusade.

We're still studying our options but it's clear this agreement violates both the letter and spirit of the Act. It allows USWest to enter the long distance business in its territory before anyone can compete against USWest's local monopoly. It also appears to disadvantage other long distance companies who have no choice but to use USWest to complete calls in that territory.
