Here's how I spec that machine:

$900 400 P-II
$100 64 MB SDRAM
$300 8.4 GB
$150 AGP 4 MB 3D vid
$100 Zip
$60 Win95
$140 +all the misc doodads
----
$1750

I guess the difference from Dell is $150 labor for assembly and software installing, $200 in imputed support cost ... the other $400 goes in Michael Dell's pocket <g>.

I have the numbers because I was planning to build one for myself. Decided against it since I could build a 333 Mhz machine for HALF the part cost (albeit without the 100 Mhz front-bus).
