The landscape makes much more sense to me if you adopt a model of TWO markets, not one: 1.) The client/browser market 2.) The OS market, upon which the client/browser market depends!! Netscape is clearly the gorilla, even now, in market 1. The problem is that Microsoft is the gorilla in market 2. So what does it do? makes its own browser free and forces the playing field into market 2! Netscape has indeed dominated and seized complete control of the client browser island, but now they discover that it is just an island and that the Microsoft water is rising all around them.
