DATA COMMUNICATIONS AND LAN TIMES MAGAZINES ANNOUNCE THE SIX BEST-OF-SHOW AWARD WINNERS AT NETWORLD+INTEROP '98 LAS VEGAS
Berkeley Networks Chosen Overall "Grand Winner" for Firewall Accelerator Agent
Las Vegas, May 5, 1998. Data Communications and LAN Times, The McGraw-Hill Companies' premier networking publications, today announced the winners of the BEST OF SHOW Awards at Networld+Interop '98 Las Vegas. The BEST OF SHOW program honors the leading new products and services announced at NetWorld+Interop that significantly advance the state-of-the-art of distributed computing and networking.
The "Grand Winner" award, given to the category winner judged to have the single, most significant new product or service at the show, was given to Berkeley Networks for its Firewall Accelerator Agent. Already known for its unique approach to high-end switching, Berkeley is the first vendor to implement a firewall-Check Point's market-leading Firewall-1-in silicon. This approach eliminates the need for a firewall in front of each switch port, providing a significant cost savings. Since switches are deployed on internal networks, it allows for protection of intranet as well as Internet connections.
Six category winners were selected from 19 initial finalists chosen from over 300 BEST OF SHOW award entries. THE BEST OF SHOW winners and their innovative products according to category were:
Network Applications: Symantec's Mobile Update. This provides an efficient way for users to monitor important network data from within their e-mail application, the most popular remote application for most users.
Network Infrastructure: The Extreme Networks Summit48 Enterprise Desktop won for its overall features, performance, and price. This Layer 3 switch has a port density of 48 10/100 ports and two gigabit Ethernet uplink ports.
Network Management and Analysis: Wandel & Goltermann's W6 Mentor. This Windows-compatible software gives expert advice on how to solve network problems on token ring, Ethernet, frame relay, and TCP/IP nets.
Network Server Systems and Peripherals: GigaNet Inc.'s cLAN Host Adapter (GNN1000). This host adapter pushes the bounds of throughput while keeping a lid on pricing. The GNN1000 can maintain speeds of 1.25 gigabits per second and latency of 8 microseconds.
WAN and Remote Access Equipment and Services: Redback Networks' SMS 1000. This service makes it easier and cheaper for providers to roll out DSL services. The benefit for end-users is that it allows them to choose between multiple DSL services.
Network Security and Performance: Berkeley Networks' Firewall Accelerator Agent puts Check Point's Firewall 1 on an ASIC inside its gigabit Ethernet switch, delivering vastly higher throughput (up to 40 Gbit/s, compared with less than 50 Mbit/s for most firewalls).
The BEST OF SHOW Product Awards program is designed to help end-users evaluate the expansive offering of new products which debut at the Network+Interop '98 Las Vegas. The editors of Data Communications and LAN Times scour the industry and show floor, evaluating hundreds of new products.
They select winners for unique and innovative products that strive to provide end-users with cutting edge networking benefits.
The BEST OF SHOW winners were announced on Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at the NetWorld+Interop Stage in the lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center. BEST OF SHOW applicants were required to be NetWorld+Interop '98 Las Vegas exhibitors and had to submit entries for consideration by April 17, 1998. In addition, the products entered have to be introduced no earlier than April 4, 1998, with a product release date no later than November 21, 1998.
