I agree with the Nissan folks: Their business and customers are quite different from Daimler Chrysler in terms of price of prododucts, image, you name it.

My speculation rather is that the Japanese will consolidate among themselves rather than with western cos. as business mentality and -cultures are quite different. Nissan is the no. 2 in Japan with about $50bn in sales in 97/98, so the probable partner is likely not to be Toyota. Mazda? Honda? The focus as I get it for Nissan is to restore profitability after years of losses. The good thing is that they are profitable even in a bad year like 97/98. Will it get still worse?

Definitely worth watching. We have a Economic Library here in Zurich sponsored by one of the big banks UBS. I phoned, they have the 96/97 Annual Report. Will go there over lunch today.
