ECHO IV LAUNCH A SUCCESS!

EchoStar Successfully Launches Fourth Satellite

EchoStar Communications saw the successful launch of its fourth satellite late Thursday from Kazakhstan, a lift-off that was followed by cheers from company employees celebrating the milestone at the new headquarters building in suburban Denver.

EchoStar Chairman and CEO Charlie Ergen was in the former Soviet republic to witness the launch.

The satellite, EchoStar 4, will be parked at 119 degrees, the company's full-CONUS DBS slot. It will replace EchoStar I, which is transferring to the company's western orbital location at 148 degrees.

In April, the Federal Communications Commission granted EchoStar's request to move the company's first DBS satellite from 119 degrees to 148 degrees. The agency also approved the company's petition to test EchoStar 4 at 127 degrees, a Mexican orbital location, prior to its transfer to 119 degrees.

Once testing is complete and EchoStar 4 is placed at 119 degrees, it will support the company's DISH Network service. EchoStar I will provide niche services and local channel access for the Western United States at 148 degrees.
