Chip, if you had an idea to use Iridium services for internet access, you have a lot more money for access and patience for screen paints than most us do. Iridium operates with 4.8kb/s vocoders; that sets a limit on the data throughput of a single, ~$3.00 minute channel. More likely for a data connection, you would be able to operate at a significant fraction of 4.8kb/s. I suppose one could try to concatenate individual channels, at a price of Nx$3.00, but not me.

My net is that the Mobile Satellite Service systems do not look like internet access platforms -- and that also goes for Iridium's company in this niche: Globalstar and the planned MCHI and CCI MSS systems, as currently planned.

Satellites seem to me like a red herring in the consideration of competitive systems for portable internet access.
