I don't think anyone believes that Mr. Gates ought to be writing the rules, but the balance needs to remain on the side of individual liberty and free market forces. Some restraint on what MSFT can do has been good for MSFT and the industry, Bill needs to know at least roughly where the boundaries are, and so do his potential competitors, otherwise innovation really will be stifled.
That is a lot different than Uncle Sam getting into the High Tech business. I can't think of a single example of a heavily government controlled business that benefited the average person, maybe someone can help me here with a counter example.
