Beware! I just came across the same problem that Hardline had a few days back. I put in an order to sell 600 shares of a stock and was alerted that I was 400 shares OVERCOMMITTED. I didn't want to send it through until I spoke with a rep. After getting in touch with Etrade the rep informed me that I did have 600 shares and they have a glich in their system - meanwhile I lost 10 minutes between my first attempt and when I actually put the trade through. I asked him if they could waive the commission fee and he refused. Oh well - just wanted to alert everyone regarding this. If you get an overcommitted message check your portfolio and see how many shares they have you listed for there.
