There's a neat article in Sky&Telescope a coupla months back. It describes the ferocity of gamma-ray bursts. It graphically describes just how screwed we'd be if one occurred in our corner of the galaxy. It's not the gamma rays which reap you grimly. It's the delayed cosmic radiation which makes the planet too "hot" to live for several hundred meters of depth.
Kinda warms the heart of anyone who lived for the next batch of bootleg firecrackers to show up in the neighborhood.
