1. Netscape refused to give away their browser for free for years, until they were losing too much market share. Then they gave up. This is proof to me that they could no longer compete.

That's true, they were beaten. They still have the largest market share I believe. They could not compete because they could not produce a product that was significantly better than their competitor's. They lost.

2. They gave away the source code so that everyone could improve/copy/innovate, or whatever they want to do with it.

Right.

3. Netscape never was forcing anyone to take their browser.

Maybe they should have been.
