Simon, I had that damn infuriating lock and hard drive problem with Netscape 4.04. When I fired up the program I had it set to have a blank "start page". As soon as I tried to go to a website - bang - massive lock. (BTW, you can shut down Netscape only by doing a control/alt/delete and following the correct commands, without rebooting the whole system.)

So, I called my ISP (Ameritech) and they lead me through a bunch of stuff reconfiguring both Netscape and some Windows parameters. I don't have a clue anymore as to what we did, but it worked! -g-

I do remember we blew out some of Windows 95 "network components" and reinstalled one of them. Also, the way the Ameritech tech went about solving the problem left me with the impression that this was not a common problem. Give your ISP a call & good luck.

Regards, DWW
