AWARE AND LUCENT TEAM UP
========================

from infras.com

Lucent (LU) announced plans this week to use Aware's ADSL Lite technology in
their DSP 1690 WildWire(tm) chip set. Aware introduced the "splitterless"
technology earlier this year - splitterless meaning you do not have to split
the line for voice and data. The obvious goal of this joint venture is to
accelerate the deployment of high-speed Internet access to the home. Data
transmission speeds 30 times faster than today's analog modems up to 1.5
Mbit/second can be attained with this product.

What is really interesting about this technology is that it will enable
users the ability to achieve 56-Kbps or digital modem connections. The
WildWire chip set will be able to function with any type of phone connection
even though DSL service has not been installed.

The future of ADSL technology has been the subject of great controversy.
According to Shannon Pleasant, communication-market analyst for In-Stat, the
market for ADSL chip sets - both splitterless and full ADSL - will initially
be less than 300,000 chips, though most of these will be devices for ADSL
Lite. In-Stat is projecting 878,000 shipments of ADSL in 1999 with slightly
over half being ADSL Lite. Over the long run, it remains to be seen whether
DSL service over copper wires, cable modems or wireless technologies will
dominate the high speed data transmission market. We believe their will be
rapid deployment of all three and that Aware has gained considerable
leverage by aligning themselves with Lucent. Clearly, this alliance will be
facing some formidable competition from Cisco (CSCO), Texas Instruments
(TXN) and other players in the ADSL space. We believe the shares offer an
interesting speculation although we would not be overweighting positions in
any portfolio.
