Sun gains set-top edge zdnet.com

Slightly stale and off topic, but you know me. The usual followup to the TCI/MSFT story, John Malone wisely tending more toward the Andy Grove philosophy rather than Bill's contradictory "Don't be paranoid / Wince will be just like Windows" advice.

Microsoft has said it will use Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Java clone for Windows CE, but Sun Chief Executive Scott McNealy said that is "a non-issue. It has a unit volume of zero. If Microsoft wants to run Java, then they're going to have to pass our compatibility tests and make sure they're not trampling any intellectual property, and convince customers they're shipping a compatible solution. In the meantime, we'll be providing Java on all interesting Microsoft platforms."

Beddow said TCI defers to Sun, of Mountain View, Calif., as the "experts" on Java.
