John, MMs sell short and then go cover. That way they can make money regardless of whether the price goes up or down. That's why you see times when buys go through and then the Ask drops.

They shake out some shares by scaring people into selling. An old game.

If there is lots of buying pressure, they can cover by widening the spread as the price quickly climbs.

There's an old saying among traders that says, "If you're long, you're wrong." It means they just try to make sure they never get stuck with inventory. To do that they just sell short first and cover later.

Watch how this works and I think you'll see what I mean.
