Article on Tellabs by Bruce Upbin in Forbes 5/18 issue was indeed negative. Main idea is that network traffic is changing from circuit switching to packet switching (true) and that Tellabs sells products into the circuit switch arena (true).

Mention is made of Tellabs $100 million investment in a broadband transport manager, but says Birck's device won't be out until 2000 and Cisco's will be out this year. Also mentioned is the $6 million spent for IBM's WDM technology, but Upbin thinks Lucent is way ahead.

Birck is painted as understanding the risks and mention is made of the recent Bell Atlantic deal and that Tellabs does a nice and regular upgrade business ala Microsoft.
