As a strict viewer (DVD player, settop box or putative HDTV) do I need or want an encoder? That is, before the advent of a consumer digital video recorder.
Even then. Do I need an encoder? Won't my Digital Cable signal be precompressed for effortless recording?
The one place an average Joe like me would want a codec would be in a digital camcorder. Do you know how far out MPEG-2 home video is? Does the concept even make sense?
Straight Qs. I don't have any answers.

Oh. A good one from the mtg. A clearly po'd fellow asked AB: "Did you or any senior manager trade illegally in the stock of C-Cube or any other company?" AB's response (duh) was "No. Never." Like, uhm, shorting the **** out of ESST? :-)
