I would like the freedom to select and negotiate for the OS like any other part of the computer.

As far as I know you have this freedom. Whenever I buy systems now I specify exactly what hardware(motherboard, HD,Video,CD,etc.) and OS I want installed. I don't usually buy from the Compaqs, and Dells anymore. I have a local shop that puts together systems based on my exact specs.

I'm sure you can order a system with no OS and write your own, but who has time like that on their hands. <g>
