Almost none of the early leaders of the Stoics were Greek and they all came from the fringes. I wonder why. Don't you think that the move away from the city-states (where men got so much of their identity and direction from the small community)to the larger impersonal empire encouraged this move to awareness of the individual? It must have been pretty scary to be thrown out on your own with not a lot of personal resources and no parental government to tell you what was expected.

Zeno has my vote on one issue-he opposed the inequality of women in any way, any class. Of course, he wasn't too keen on money, law and marriage either. Gosh, JFreddy, none of these philosophies is making a convert of me! What's next?
