Apple online computer store buzzes with sales
CUPERTINO, Calif. (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. said Friday that its
online Apple Store (www.apple.com/store) received a record $1.9 million
in orders in a single 24 hour period, driven by sales of its new
PowerBook G3 notebooks.
Apple also said its just-launched Apple store for the education market
(www.apple.com/education/store) received over $1 million in orders
during its first 24 hours.
"We are delighted that The Apple Store continues to set new sales
records," said Steve Jobs, Apple's interim chief executive, in a
statement. "The growing popularity of Apple.com and The Apple Store is
amazing - our websites now receive 10 million hits per day."
Apple just launched its new PowerBook notebook computers designed around
its G3 processor on Wednesday, along with a sleek all-in-one Macintosh
design called the iMac, for $1,299.
The iMac will not be available until August. The PowerBooks, which start
at $2,299, are available now.
