[ Interop98 GTE ]

Ok... I saw some of the equipment at the show....

GTE-ILEC had the Fujitsu speedport installed.... no Westell. The GTE-CLEC had the Flexcap modems installed. I asked about the expansion into 16 different locations later this year, and wasn't happy with the answer. I asked about collocation,

GTE-CLEC - they would resell the RBOC and GTE-ILEC service.
Bill C-.. You're not going to collocate Westell equipment in the CO's?
GTE-CLEC - No, we will use the existing equipment.
Bill C - So, that's Alcatel for the JPC, Fujitsu for GTE?
GTE-CLEC - Yes
Bill C - So what market will you go after with the Westell equipment?
GTE-CLEC - Apartments, etc

Dale Veeneman had some slides at the "DSL-Deployment Realities and Opportunities" talk:

* had some history of ADSL with GTE... CLEC deployed 50 RADSL modems in Mariana Del Ray,

* ADSL modems work very well; for large-scale deployment we NEED TOTAL SYSTEM... automated loop qualifications, automatic provisioning/configuration, automated IP address management, fault and performance monitoring, efficient installation, user-friendly help desk, integrated billing.

* ATM vs IP - PPP/FUNI to CO concentrators (DSLAMs), single PVC (using L2TP ro NSP elements) to each Network service provider... Multiple PVCs for tiered service classes... layer 3, layer 4 swithcing, etd

* Universal ADSL - as yet, unproven... potential for headaches for service providers, given a choice, customers may opt for one time cost of the LPF's "splitter" rather than lifetime of reduced rates and bit errors when using POTS.

Nick Burd from Rockwell talked more about the splitterless modems and problems, they expect to solve these problems in the UAWG:

* removal of the splitter at the remote end will allow interference between the telephone and device and the upstream DSL
* off-hook telephone device can cause distortion in the audible POTS channel
* DSL modems must rapidly re-train to the changing line conditions caused by on/off hook events. These re-trains today take 10-30 seconds.
* etc.
