Who is genetically protected from HIV infection? According to a Reuters' report today, 15% of white people, but not native blacks or native Asians, have a genetic mutation that resulted from the bubonic plague 700 years ago. The mutations protect people from HIV infection and/or cause the virus to "progress more slowly." CCR2 and CCR5 genes control the macrophage immune system that is attacked by the HIV virus and another gene controls SDF1 protein production that enables immune cells "to communicate." Apparently, during some AIDS trials, genetic studies have been done. So maybe this explains why some people do not get HIV infection at all or why some have very slowly progressive disease. Now, I wonder, how does one get tested to find out who has these gene mutations? "Dr. Oliver" (and others): Do you know anything additional about this?
