Reese, 1948 is part in Loire wines of "Les Trois Glorieuses" (the three glorious ones), three year in a row (47-48-49) where all wines were incredibly good. My suggestion would be to try to find some Loire (Anjou) chenins of that year, either Quart de Chaumes, Vouvray, or Coteaux du Layon. Clemenceau used to prefer those (sweet) wines to Sauternes and they were rated more expensive than Sauternes in 1920s Nicolas wine lists. Today, Anjou moelleux wines are rated 9 for 1947, and 8 for 1949, but (Nicolas card ratings) my guess is that 48 is still at a 8 level. You could also try Cognacs or Armagnacs in your 1948 year.
