Jane, Hope all is going well with you.
Most of the Unitarians I know , do believe in God. Saying that their pohilosophy is more attractive to communists ans aetheists, is an unfair generalization, IMO. It is like characterizing all christians as southern rural, conservative, uneducated, racists. That would also be unfair and untrue as we well know.
The commonality that I have found among U.U.'s, is a willingness to look beyond organized religion in search of a spirituality that is more all encompassing and non-credal. Most are looking for a relationship with god that is more one on one, and not through an intermediary(priest, rabbi, shaman, etc.)
My own preferences would best be described as mix of new age and U.U. (You may all now start flaming me:-) )
