A Julian date is just a different date system, where dates are measured in days from a reference point in the past.

It's used a lot in astronomical settings, and also a fair amount in computer programs, because it's easier to do things like "add n days" to a Julian date, and then convert it back into a standard date when you need to display it to a user.
