Brian: Here are some interesting facts from a Moody's Investor's Service Report dated April 21, 1998. AMAT has 367.25m shares outstanding and institutions own about 58% or approximately 212.5m shares as of that date. During the prior three months to that date, institutions have sold approximately 101.2m shares while they have bought approximately 48.5m shares. So since January 21, 1998, the big boys have been net sellers of approximately 52.7m shares of AMAT and that was after the market low retest of January 12, 1998 and after tax loss selling season. If one is trying to measure overall institutional sentiment, it is best to look at the money flow and to ignore their words.
