dave: Westell had their Supervision DSLAM and FlexCap2 racking on display. These units were attached to the Redback box. The DSLAM had 6 CAP dual line cards in one half and 3 dual TI DMT line cards in the other half. The TI cards take two slots at this time, but should reduce to one slot by years end. My main concern was the Supervision DSLAM unit, so I really didn't look much further.
TI had a Supervision DMT modem that was connected back to the Westell DSLAM unit. They also had the AMTX Allegro DSLAM unit in their booth.
LU had a Supervision DMT modem that was connected back to the Westell DSLAM unit. They were showing a video at ~7Meg/second.
DSC didn't have a booth at the show, but the Litespan unit was in the FORE booth, with a Westell FlexCap2 modem. They had 2 ADSL line cards in the Litespan unit. Not sure of the density of the line card, "single or dual"... but I'll assume dual.
My overall perception from Interop98.... the RBOC's/GTE-ILEC aren't going to deploy ADSL quickly. Telechoice doesn't see over 100,000 lines installed by the end of 1998 in the US.... 500,000 by the end of 1999. The RBOC's want a TOTAL SYSTEM for billing, management, etc... and that's not here yet.
My view after Interop98, Westell needs to expand their relationships with the CLEC's/Apartment-building-complexes, while the RBOCS's plan for mass deployment while blaming the manufactures for not having a TOTAL SYSTEM yet.... until later |
