You may be right that IBM is improving in their ability to execute. I don't follow them close enough to know very well. It just doesn't seem to me that their market position is where it should be based on their incredible ability to innovate. Based on all the good ideas they come up with, they should be head and shoulders above the competition, not just among the leaders of the pack. One example would be PRML technology for disk drives, where they invented it and then let CRUS, TXN, and LU make all the money from designing and selling the chips. I guess though that was a mistake made 3-4 years back. And they certainly are the choice of a number of companies for foundry agreements, but it almost seems like they do a better job of making chips for others than for themselves.
