Flickerful, interesting topic. The shift caused by the inherent distributed nature of the internet, powerful uPs, distributed software such as Java, have hardly impacted the social structure yet. My main area of interest is how this impacts the way commerce is conducted; how businesses promote and sell their products, how customers find and spend money on them. That is bound to radically change despite the best efforts of the ad industry and existing business "establishment" to mold the internet along the lines of traditional broadcast media.

Agent software will play a significant part in this transformation. At the heart of the change is the fact that while the human experience was molded to fit with the linear modality of broadcast systems, the interactive nature of the internet and user enabled or entrusted actions of "agents" will help to shape the new media more to the human psyche and mode of operation. The much greater flexibility, power and creativity of the internet doesn't fit the old broadcast paradigm.

My thoughts have concentrated on how marketing on the internet can be shaped to best fit this current of change to gain a commercial advantage. I plan to launch an internet product marketing business within the next few months. One aspect of it is what is called Web Agent Marketing or WAM (U.S. Trademark). Now at the start-up stage; not sure if I will get it going on personal finances or get more capital behind it.
