The project could have wide ramifications for industry, academia and the public because it would make possible almost overnight many developments that had been expected to unfold over the next decade.
One such development is individualized medicine, the tailoring of drugs and other treatments to patients depending on specific variations in their DNA sequence.

This seems a bit overstated, hasn't the NY Times learned their lesson from ENMD yet?

The two men concluded in January that it would be possible to sequence the 3 billion letters of human DNA within three years, at a cost of $150 million to $200 million.

According to BioCentury that came out this weekend, they give a range of $150M to $400M as a cost over 3 years, so it sounds like a positive spin being put on here too.

Now, this is an awesome event. I'm curious to know about PE ABI's new sequencing technology. What is good about this is that they say they plan to keep most of this public and that they don't want to compete with the existing EST companies or to become a Pharma. They still want to sell lots of machines and reagents to these companies. Plus, much of the coding regions of the DNA are already being patented, so really the stuff that is left is the "junk" DNA and the obscure genes that are rarely expressed and thus hard to find with ESTs. What that says is that companies like INCY and HGSI can do more faster and cheaper too. There is a hell of a lot of DNA out there that needs to be sequenced. Eventually, it will be to the level that they will be able to sequence your DNA vs my DNA vs ??? DNA and really see the differences between individual organisms.

The GENOMICS DECADE marches on.........
