<<< The goal of AMZN is strictly brand recognition. It matter not in what product such as books, music, video, etc. They want everyone on the internet to know the name of Amazon and equate that with quality, service, price and loyalty>>>
Bingo.
Heck, with the convergence of media, I wouldn't be surprised a couple years down the line to see AMZN selling pay-per-view video, piped directly via cable modem/ISDN/whatever, to your combined computer/TV/stereo. Plus lots more.
The first step is establishing a comfortable relationship with consumers. Their sales growth in dealing with books has proven their ability to do that. With the infrastructure and "mind share" established, who knows where they might go? There are may places that are logical extensions of their purpose as the premiere online merchant -- just as AOL has established itself as being a lot more than some e-mail and a connection to the internet.
Maybe AMZN should be compared less to Borders and B&N, than to the big superstores like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. (A lot of them carry books too, right?)
