I'm not sure if I'm following your terminology. By "shorting calls", do you mean selling calls (naked or covered)?

Believe it or not, some stocks have a remarkable tendency to close at the point of maximum pain at expiry on a very regular basis. In case you're interested, here's a web site that makes a practice of tracking such things: pipeline.com

Actually, for a buy and hold play, selling covered calls on some of those nice bounces really isn't all that bad an idea.
