Which book is it that discusses Jean-Louis Gassee and can you summarize what was said about him?
The book by Jim Carlton, Apple: The Inside Story
Gassee was in charge of Apple engineering during the mid to late 80s. This means he had last word on software and hardware. Throughout, he believed that Macs would always be vastly superior, and that therefore Apple 1) should always pursue a "high-right" strategy, meaning high margins and high-end users, screw the little guy, and screw market share; 2) that Apple should never license, and 3) that Apple should never have anything to do with Microsoft and Windows. At the same time, Gassee was not an engineer, and not a good leader, so MacOS didn't advance much under his reign. So it was really Gassee who prevented Macs from becoming market dominant, and squandered their OS lead. When Sculley on occasion tried to change Gassee's mind, Gassee shouted him down.
