Bill >> Did they say chip or production product by 2Q 1997?<<
They were discussing chips,.5 micron currently. Although it was stated NEC's "big driver do it quickly, speedily, efficiently, and we're working hard to meet these time frames and we think we can....."
If the first chip production is in the first quarter, I don't see why a completed product can't be produced by mid 97.
* Discussing NEC and chip manufacturing .5 micron technology available, .35 micron 2.5 years away, and working towards .25 micron.
"NEC 1st quarter 97 Production, 2 Q mass quantities. Drivers toward this goal: There are several large numbers of field trial deployments that people are trying to implement in these time frames, so the good news is here, NEC has a very large investment in video equipment and servers and the missing key here is VDSL, last mile 5280ft. Their big driver do it quickly, speedily, efficiently, and we're working hard to meet these time frames and we think we can....." ********
I believe that even though some companies will have a product out prior to Amati, it will be inferior, if Amati is treating their VDSL development, the same as thier ADSL development.
A few quotes from the Herb Greenburg Telephone conversation around June: ******** "But if ADSL prevails, Amati CEO Jim Steenbergen is convinced Amati will rule. "I can tell you we will outperform anything Westell and Paradyne does,'' he says. Motorola is developing chips based on Amati's technology. Prototypes are expected by fall, "then we'll debug them, and build modems sometime by the second quarter of next year,'' said Steenbergen.
But Steenbergen isn't swayed by competition. "By the time the chip comes out we'll be developing things that are far ahead of what someone else can do who has just received the chip.''
He adds that "the biggest companies in the world are coming in here to partner with us to make equipment. They say that's where the margins are.''
"I've got people offering $100 million to do a private placement in this, and I could do it in a week.''
***************************************** As you mentioned on the VDSL standard, the Winner here will be welcomed news. The only way to find out whats going on on the VDSL standard, would be to attend a T1 meeting.
It will be a long battle.
