India conducts three underground nuclear tests
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India conducted three underground nuclear tests in the western desert state of Rajasthan on Monday at 3.45 p.m. (1015 GMT), Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said.
"I have an announcement to make: today at 1545 hours (1015 GMT), India conducted three underground nuclear tests in the Pokhran range (in Rajasthan state)," Vajpayee told a hurriedly summoned news conference.
"The tests, conducted today, were with a fission device, a low-yield device and a thermonuclear device," Vajpayee said, reading from a brief statement. "The measured yields are in line with expected values. Measurements have also confirmed that there was no release of radioactivity into the atmosphere."
"These were contained explosions like the experiment conducted in May 1974," Vajpayee said, referring to the May 18, 1974, underground test that was also conducted in Pokhran.
"I warmly congratulate the scientists and engineers who have carried out these successful tests," the prime minister said.
