I disagree, I believe the basic premise of the article was that BLD would be disadvantaged by the Chrysler merger and that is an assumption based on an inaccurate understanding of the situation. I've explained in my previous post why Chrysler doesn't mean much to BLD from a revenue standpoint which completely contradicts her statement that the merger must have been a blow to BLD.

I would like to point out a couple of other things as well. The author uses both GM and Volkswagen as competitors to BLD when in fact they are both using Ballard fuel cells in their programs. She simply fails to make the distinction between developing fuel cells and developing fuel cell ENGINES. Ballard develops the fuel cell. And they do it for more than just autos, a point you seem to keep forgetting in your analysis Sid.

With respect to patent protection, remember that BLD has sold fuel cells to most of the major OEM's. If you are an OEM and you have purchased a BLD fuel cell, and you at one point suddenly develop your own fuel cell, you had better be pretty careful that your fuel cell in no way comes close to BLD's design because you would have a pretty weak case that you did it on your own. I think it's fair to ask, with all this talk about the strong competition, WHERE THE HECK ARE THEIR FUEL CELLS? It's one thing for competitors to dismiss this Canadian company without attribution which is what one would expect from the competition, it's another to actually trot out a product that comes close to competing.

If you want to know what I think is behind the article it is that many Americans have a problem with the fact BLD is a Canadian company with technology that beats theirs. Pure nationalistic pride is at stake here. As an example look at how many choose to deny the possibility that Daimler took over Chrysler, preferring instead the idea that it was a merger of equals. Not only that but we're forced to read how eventually it will be majority held by American's because the US market is so strong and Americans will buy up most of the shares. This of course ignores the fact that most other markets are outperforming the US. It's American denial that we live in a global economy and the world does not revolve around the US.

Consider the article in that light and I think you will see what I'm getting at.
