Ascend Wares To Include IPass Code
By Randy Barrett, Inter@ctive Week Online May 11, 1998 7:41 AM PDT IPass Inc. is expected this week to announce that Ascend Communications Inc. will include iPass's roaming code on its primary authentication server. The inclusion of iPass technology - which allows traveling users to log into their home Internet service provider (ISP) through local ISPs - on the Ascend Access Control servers will greatly enhance iPass's market penetration, said iPass Chief Executive Officer Chris Moore. "This helps us go even farther," Moore said. The Mountain View, Calif., company has been gobbling market share in the Internet roaming industry and now counts 359 ISPs in 151 countries among its members. IPass's primary competitor is GRIC Communications, which has 250 member networks in 75 countries. Inking deals with vendors of authentication, firewall and virtual private network (VPN) hardware is a key strategy for iPass because it allows networks to easily pick up the service without installing new software, Moore
said. IPass handles all of the back-end billing and settlement between member ISPs, which include GTE, Hongkong Telecom, IStar Internet and PSINet.
Last Week, Red Creek Communication Inc, signed a deal to include iPass code on its VPN Technologies Inc. led the trend by accepting iPass code on its servers. |
