Amzn is one of their customers. < SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 1998--On the eve of its second anniversary, InterNAP Network Services Corporation has launched service in New York -- an integral development in the company's national expansion plan.
InterNAP is a Seattle-based high-performance Internet connectivity and routing technology company that is pioneering Quality-of-Service-based Internet and TCP/IP connectivity.
The New York service hub, or Private Network Access Point (P-NAP[SM]), complements InterNAP's existing P-NAP in Seattle. New York is the first step in a national service rollout by InterNAP that will include San Francisco in June, followed by Chicago and Atlanta later this year. The company's national expansion is financed in large part by Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures (Bellevue, Wash.) and San Francisco-based Hambrecht & Quist Venture Capital (NYSE:HQ).
InterNAP's New York operation provides services for inaugural customers that include New York-based Datek Online, the nation's fourth largest online brokerage firm, and Disclosure, a unit of Primark Corporation (NYSE:PMK) and leading provider of financial intelligence via online and CD-ROM-based research tools.
"The launch of our New York P-NAP is a direct reflection of the growing market demand for Quality-of-Service-based Internet connectivity. InterNAP's proprietary technology provides a unique, 'direct-delivery' type of Internet service unmatched by conventional ISPs or any other network providers in the industry today," said InterNAP's president and CEO, Tony Naughtin. "Companies and organizations with any sort of 'mission critical' dependence on the Internet are finding InterNAP's faster, more reliable service proposition not a luxury, but a necessity as they look to maintain and increase their own market share."
In the last year, InterNAP has more than doubled in size: from 35 to over 60 customers and from 12 to 30 employees. Recent client acquisitions include Seattle-based TechWave, a leader in e-commerce technology and software distribution via online stores; Bellevue-based HomeGrocer.com, a new online grocery shopping and delivery service; and ConnectExpress, a rapidly growing regional ISP. In addition, InterNAP has recently booked significant service upgrades with a number of existing clients such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE), and go2net (NASDAQ:GNET).
InterNAP provides companies with a distinct, proprietary type of high-speed Internet and Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity. This unique Internet service allows direct access to over 90 percent of all global Internet destinations in a manner which bypasses the Internet's public exchange "choke points" and eliminates other inefficiencies which result from the way global Internet backbones typically exchange traffic. This proprietary service greatly speeds mass content distribution and file delivery on the Internet, and virtually eliminates the chances that file transfers will be dropped or lost due to congestion at the public exchanges or public Internet backbone outages.
According to some industry sources, the dedicated business Internet connectivity industry will be a $9 billion business by the end of the year 2000, as more and more companies and organizations look to the Internet for their commerce and communication needs.
"When InterNAP was formed just two years ago, many industry pundits said that what we're doing today 'couldn't be done,' that traffic could not be symmetrically, efficiently and economically routed on the Internet," Naughtin stated. "Once we unlocked the key to doing this, the company literally took off. The growth we've experienced in the past year, doubling our customer base and nearly tripling our number of employees, is just the beginning. As we continue opening new P-NAPs in other parts of the country, we expect our growth to be exponential. The demand is there, and only our technology can fulfill that demand in terms of performance and scalability."
InterNAP, founded in May 1996, first began marketing its services in late 1996, and to date has over 60 customers, including Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), The Seattle Times, Nordstrom (NASDAQ:NOBE), Fine.com (NASDAQ:FDOT), The Cobalt Group, Deluxe Corporation (NYSE:DLX), Safeway (NYSE:SWY), and numerous Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the United States and Canada.
